MCTAqua is a ready-to-use emulsion containing ~ 50% MCT oil and 50% water. Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCT) is an easy digestible fat source.
The product is a ready-to-use mixture of triglycerides, mainly consisting of C8 and C10 fatty acids. This source of fat is absorbed directly into the portal circulation and does not require the more complex digestion process of Long-Chain Triglycerides (LCTs). MCTs are therefore absorbed more rapidly and are transported directly to the liver, where they can be quickly converted into energy or ketones. This unique metabolic pathway makes MCTs particularly beneficial in medical and nutritional applications.
MCTAqua serves as a Food for Special Medical Purposes / Medical Food for patients unable to sufficiently digest or absorb conventional fats and for the dietary management of patients suffering from severe malnutrition, and drug-resistant epilepsy, also known as refractory epilepsy.
It is suitable for infants, children, and adults. The dosage should be determined by a clinician or dietician and the product must be used under medical supervision.
MCTAqua is derived from modified coconut and palm kernel oil in order to minimise the presence of long-chain fatty acids (<1%).
It is unflavoured and has a very low viscosity and excellent oxidative stability. MCTAqua can be mixed can be mixed with hot/cold drinks and/or food, taken directly, or added to tube feeding. It contains no trans fatty acids.
MCTAqua offers a range of benefits that can support various health conditions, particularly those related to fat absorption, energy metabolism, and brain health. Its unique properties make it a valuable nutritional support in both clinical and health settings.
Improved Absorption and Utilization: Malnourished patients often have compromised digestive systems, making it difficult to absorb nutrients effectively. MCTs are more readily absorbed compared to long-chain triglycerides because they do not require bile salts for digestion and are directly transported to the liver.
Immediate Energy Source: MCTs provide a rapid source of energy because they are quickly absorbed and metabolised. This makes them ideal for patients needing immediate energy, such as malnourished patients or those recovering from surgery.
Caloric Density: MCTs provide a high caloric density in a small volume, which is crucial for malnourished patients who may have reduced appetite or difficulty consuming large amounts of food. This allows for adequate caloric intake without overwhelming the digestive system.
Supports Weight Gain and Muscle Mass: The rapid absorption and conversion of MCTs to energy can help support weight gain and maintenance of muscle mass in malnourished patients. This is vital for recovery and improving overall health outcomes.
Supports Ketosis: MCT oil is effective in elevating ketone levels in the blood, making it a useful supplement for those following ketogenic diets for epilepsy management or weight loss.
Improves Gut Health: MCTs possess antimicrobial properties that can help balance gut flora, potentially benefiting patients with gut dysbiosis or infections.
Enhances Cognitive Function: The ketones produced from MCT oil can provide an alternative energy source for the brain, which may improve cognitive function in patients with mild cognitive impairment.
Supports Immune Function: The antimicrobial properties of MCTs can help support the immune system by combating harmful bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
Palatability and Ease of Use: MCTAqua is palatable and easier to incorporate into various dietary regimens. This increases patient compliance and ensures consistent intake of essential nutrients.
MCTAqua his for the dietary management of patients suffering from severe malnutrition, drug-resistant epilepsy, also known as refractory epilepsy, and other patients where fat absorption or metabolism of LCT fat is impaired and a high MCT intake is indicated. Besides these areas of use, there are also less common conditions where dietary management with MCTs is beneficial.
